Mark Boaden and Nigel Kennett established Advanced Fibreglass Techniques (AFT) around four and a half years ago, specialising in high quality, hand-laid repairs, alterations and modifications.
Not surprisingly, both Mark, who apprenticed with Wagner Boat Constructions and Nigel, who started with Port River Marine Services before also joining Tom Wagner, take great pride in their well-honed abilities to produce truly professional workmanship.
AFT’s clean, tidy workshop is located in a highly secure complex of units just off Port Wakefield Road in Parafield Gardens. The first thing we noticed was the absence of a chopper gun. “All our work is hand-laid, using chop-strand mat and multi-axel, double bias fabrics” Mark explained.
Insurance work, pre-sale and pre-season detailing plus general maintenance tasks comprise a large part of AFT’s business. Apart from boats, AFT services owners of 4WD trailers and campervans, as well as going on-site to work on prime movers when required.
On the subject of boats however, the range of services available from AFT is very broad indeed.
From a comparatively simple detailing task, Mark and Nigel also carry out repairs to floors, stringers and transoms. As well, they fabricate and install engine bearers when carrying out modifications for either single or twin engine installations, along with all manner of hull and keel repairs.
With the ‘glass work done, Mark and Nigel apply gelcoat matched as best to the original colour, to keep the boat as “original” as possible. This is then wet-rubbed and polished. Two pack marine paints are used when required. Not surprisingly, AFT also holds a good number of moulds for seats, steps and the like.
General maintenance work, including colour-matched re-sprays, waxing, full polishing and even 12 volt wiring are services also on offer.
We were very impressed with how all tools were stowed in large steel lockers, leaving the work area clear and clean, a true indication of the men’s professionalism and pride in their workmanship. In fact, warranties apply to all work carried out and materials used by AFT, varying of course according to the nature of each task performed.
