This 540 Trailblazer one heck of a package

Gunnings Marine has put together an awesome boating opportunity with this new Trailcraft 540 Trailblazer, built in WA in 2010, powered by a one-owner 90hp Mercury Saltwater outboard, with just 75 hours on the clock.

We took this formidable fishing platform for a test run off Wallaroo in April, in westerly winds, seas to half a metre and came away very impressed.

When it arrived on its factory I-beam trailer we noted the big factory bimini with front and side clears plus a 6-rod ‘launcher. Both the Mercury and its stainless steel prop. gleamed in the sunlight, as did the 540 Trailblazer’s excellent paintwork. A grappling anchor was secure in the bow roller, flanked by sturdy bow rails, forward of a draining anchor well, while a large tinted hatch was set just below the tinted ‘screen.

At the transom were two boarding platforms with grab rails, scuppers for the self draining deck and to port, a transom door, 2-step fold-down ladder, bait tank plus inside, a large battery locker.

We climbed aboard into a fully carpeted cockpit, 640mm deep, with 1.48m side shelves below nice wide side decks, each of which was fitted with a rod holder.

The two swivelling/sliding helm seats were mounted on pedestals, each with a tackle locker. Footrests were provided, as was a glove box and grab rails. The Mercury’s speedo, tacho, trim, hours and fuel gauges were installed, plus a compass and marine radio. The bimini offered nearly 2m of headroom.

What we couldn’t see of course, were the full width floating gussets, full length stringers, welded stiffened plate floor sections and box section keel structure. But, by looking up under the gunnels, we did see examples of the extensive, high quality seam welding which ensures the renowned toughness of Trailcraft hulls.

That hull strength and integrity came to the fore once we were underway out in Spencer Gulf. The 90hp Mercury Saltwater proved to have plenty of power for the 540 Trailblazer as we ran at speed into, with and along the half metre seas. The ride was dry, smooth and very quiet, while the mechanical steering gave excellent feel to the helm which was unaffected by the many side-on impacts we incurred.

At rest, we two adults stood against the port deck, causing just 2° of list from the beamy hull.
