Haines Hunter 585 R Series fitted with a 4-stroke Yamaha is a compelling partnership

We were privileged last month to not only test this stylish, powerful Haines Hunter 585 R Series but also do so on the beautiful waters of picturesque Porter Bay at Port Lincoln.

Delivered by Port Lincoln Boat Supplies to a local businessman earlier in the year, the 585 R Series, as specified by the owner, was powered by a very sophisticated 200hp four stroke Yamaha, spinning an 18 – M 14 1/4” factory Alliance Series stainless steel (s.s.) propeller.

Flush-mounted on the helm fascia were a client-specified Lowrance HDS7 fishfinder, with Broadband Sounder™ technology, built-in GPS antenna and high definition mapping, along with a Fusion MS-IP600 marine AM/FM/ iPod/AUX stereo with internal iPod docking technology.

Also on the dash were more, standard items, including a grab rail and moulded, lockable glove box and s.s. drink holder for the passenger, then a GME GX600A VHF marine radio, Yamaha speedo, tacho and fuel gauges, plus an ignition switch. As well, we noted the Lectrotab and factory electric winch switch panels, a Ritchie compass plus another drink holder.

A very smart Monza sports wheel controlled the Sea Star hydraulic steering, while large adjustable, swivelling helm seats sat beneath a 2m+ tall bimini with clears, which included a six rod holder on its s.s. frame. The cuddy was very spacious, with storage under the upholstered bench seats and a large tinted hatch above.

Moving to the cockpit, which was 1.8m wide, 1.85m long and 850mm deep, we noted the very refined layout and high quality of materials. Just the fold away 2-person rear lounge was a piece of work in its own right. The spacious double side shelves, each with two rod racks, stored a great number of essential items, not one of which moved when we were travelling at high speed.

With a battery locker to starboard, bait tank set above and step-through to the boarding platform to port, the transom also carried a big, removable factory bait board. Externally we found a two-rung s.s. fold down ladder, Lecrotab trim tabs and a sieve-capped intake for the deck wash.

Throughout this boat, both the interior and exterior fittings were exemplary, as was the understated elegance of the grey and black on white decor.

The Haines Hunter 585 R Series rode on a dual axle Dunbier trailer with a Powerwinch fitted above a Carlisle Hydra Star™ trailer brake actuator.

Oddly, the builder refered to its 585 R Series as “a versatile little runabout”, but we would beg to disagree, particularly when it was flying through the deep wash of a passing tuna boat at nearly 40 knots. This rig rode, performed and handled to a level one would expect from a larger, longer hull and it could more than handle the sheer power of the 200hp Yamaha outboard.

Over seas just shy of white caps we quickly reached 37 knots (69 kph) with ridiculous ease, feeling comfortable with the helm response of the hull very early into the test. The Hydra Star steering was beautifully weighted as we threw the 585 R Series into a series of fast turns and runs to all quarters. At low speeds, the hull could turn both ways in just over its hull length and was very responsive to the helm when in reverse.

Cruising at 27 knots (50 kph), with the big Yamaha ticking over at a lazy 4,000rpm we enjoyed a very comfortable, stable ride, both for those sitting and standing, while the external freeboard of nearly 1m. kept things nice and dry throughout the test.

As an exercise in form and function, Haines Hunter have much to be proud about in this impressive 585 R Series.
